The retirement party was a blast! You said good-bye to your co-workers and old bosses. Sure, some people said they would keep in touch but you know they will continue to be busy with their own lives. You put your cardboard box in the car, you’re sitting wondering what’s next?
But here’s the thing: you’re not quite ready to kick back and relax just yet. Of course there will be some time to figure out which path to take while taking some well-deserved time with family and friends.
Or take that cruise you finally decided to take because you know at some point you’ll need to make a decision.
Transitioning from Employee to Working for Yourself is Scary
Retirement is often seen as the end of a long and successful career, a time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor. The idea of volunteering at a local charity is very appealing also.
However, for many retirees, the idea of completely stepping away from work is simply not an option. Whether it’s the desire to stay active or the need for additional income, or the excitement of starting something new, more and more retirees are choosing to embark on the journey of part-time work or being your own boss.
You’ve been at the same job or career the majority of your working life.
But make no mistake, transitioning from being an employee to working for yourself can be a daunting task. As an employee, you have a set time to show up everyday and time to leave.
You already know what you have to do for the 8 hours you’re there. If not, you have a boss or manager to remind you of work priorities for that day or the necessary changes or training you have to attend.
When you’re your own boss, you have to set up your own systems and plans to navigate working for yourself. Then, figure out a business plan or classes you need to take to help with the transition.
Feeling Like You’re Too Old to Learn Something New
It’s very natural to feel apprehensive about learning new skills and technologies, especially if you’re taken a while to dip your toe into the entrepreneurial landscape.
The world is constantly changing and sometimes feels that as soon as a new technology is developed, it outdated the very next day. So, instead of focusing on what you don’t know, embrace the opportunity to discover a new passion.
The trick or hack is to find something you enjoy and figure out a way to make it profitable. Sure it will take some time but figuring out what you know or already know is the biggest part of the battle.
The Benefits of Part-time Work or Entrepreneurship
Working beyond your retirement has its own set of inherent benefits. It allows you to maintain a self of purpose and fulfillment. Whether it’s a passion project, part-time work or entrepreneurship, the ability to contribute and make a different can be incredibility rewarding.
It also provides the flexibility to set your own schedule and work at your own pace. It allows you to strike a balance between work and leisure.
Embrace the Journey
As you continue to explore part-time work or working for yourself, it’s crucial you embrace the process and enjoy the ride. Don’t make it stressful. Find a job that may interest you. Find local training programs that are in place to help you transition.
In Conclusion
Transitioning from a 9 to 5 to working for yourself after retirement may seem difficult at first, but it’s a journey that can lead to incredible personal and professional growth.
Don’t let the fear of the unknown or the feeling of being too old hold you back. There are so many individuals that found their calling or started incredible career businesses later in life.
Use your skills or learn new ones to create a life that bring you joy and fulfillment. Retirement doesn’t have to be the end, but the beginning of a brand new journey.
